Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

What Not To Do When Dealing With Mold

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation What Not To Do When Dealing With Mold Protect your home by giving SERVPRO of Central St. Petersburg / Pinellas Park a call today to consult with a mold specialist.

In as little as 48 hours, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business when there’s a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. SERVPRO of Central St. Petersburg / Pinellas Park has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Check out these tips below on what NOT to do when you spot mold.

What Not to Do:

Don’t touch or disturb the mold:

Some varieties of mold are infectious. These can cause skin rashes, irritation, and fungal infections on open wounds. You should never touch mold with bare hands or get it on your skin. Whenever you clean mold, protective gloves should be worn. The gloves should be the waterproof, rubber type. This will protect you from the mold, as well as, from any cleaning products or biocides that may be used during the cleaning process.

Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth:

Mold spores are very much like the seeds of a flower, only microscopic in size. If you bump or shake any items or building materials that have mold on them, particularly dry mold, the microscopic spores can easily be released into the air and spread the contamination to other locations in your home.

Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself:

If a mold-contaminated area is larger than 10 square feet in size, you should consult with a mold specialist to determine a proper remediation procedure. If the area is larger than 100 square feet, you should have the mold professionally remediated.

Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold:

Bleach labels will warn you that chlorine bleach will only be effective on a “hard, non-porous surface.’’ This basically means that chlorine bleach is not made to soak in. Therefore, it's limited to hard surfaces like tile or glass.

SERVPRO Has a Thorough Process for Mold Remediation in St. Petersburg

Mold Remediation SERVPRO Has a Thorough Process for Mold Remediation in St. Petersburg Cleaning up after a fire or water damage is key to making sure MOLD does not appear in you ST. Pete home or business.

Storm damage, flooding and other water damage can be a  problem in the St. Pete area at times. Homes and businesses deal with it almost every year. What many of them do not realize is that getting rid of the water is just the beginning.

Mold damage in the St. Pete area can be scary looking. Seeing black streaks or patches on ceilings and walls unnerves most people. SERVPRO has the training necessary to find the extent of the infestation and the equipment and experience to remove it in a timely and effective manner using a number of methods approved by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification).

Direct Spraying
We use a hand pump or powered sprayers to apply disinfectants and other chemicals to mold infested areas. Since this method does wet the surface being cleaned, our technicians use this equipment on areas where there is unlikely to be any discoloration of the surface.

Wet Fogging
We use ultra low volume (ULV) foggers to disperse water-based disinfectants and deodorizers. They generate tiny particles that penetrate into most areas. Since this does create additional moisture, our technicians will remove any furniture and other property that might be damaged by this method. If there are items that cannot be removed, they will be covered with drop cloths to protect them.

Dry Fogging
This type of fogging (also called Thermal Fogging) is used where mold has been discovered, but there has otherwise been little or no water damage. Dry-fogging uses solvent based cleaners and deodorants which are heated and forced through a vaporizer. This converts the chemicals into minuscule particles. As with wet fogging, this allows them to penetrate into most areas. Since there is no significant moisture added, this method is preferred whenever possible.

Ventilation and Air Scrubbing
As different cleaning methods are employed; the rooms and other affected areas must be ventilated. Our technicians accomplish this by setting up high-velocity exhaust fans (box fans) to blow out any mold particulates before cleaning begins. This helps to ensure that any mold spores released while cleaning are blown outside your building. This also helps to reduce the amount of time required to elapse before occupants are allowed back in.

As mold is removed from carpets, floors and other property; the air must be cleaned as well. We use specially designed HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters to remove mold as well as odors and other particulates from the air in an affected area. They are extremely effective in removing particles and then re-circulating clean air back into the room.

Mold removal is an extensive process, but it can be done swiftly and effectively with the right team behind you. If you suspect you have a mold infestation, call us today at (727) 521 - 2562. SERVPRO of Central St. Petersburg & Pinellas Park is ready to serve you.

Detecting Mold in Your Home

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Detecting Mold in Your Home Pinellas Park Mold groth discovered after baseboards and carpet was removed after a water damage.

While some Pinellas Park mold growths in a home may be obvious, the mold commonly grows in areas of a home where it is difficult to detect.

Pinellas Park mold needs moisture to grow. Areas, where moisture is common, are the most likely places for mold to grow. Bathrooms, kitchens, and basements are rooms where moisture and mold growth may be expected. However, roof or pipe leaks, sweating plumbing fixtures and poor ventilation can cause mold to grow in all areas of a home or building. The first step in seeking to uncover mold is to look for signs of moisture. Water will leave stains on untreated wood, drywall, and many painted surfaces. Surfaces that display bubbles in the finish or are warped have likely been exposed to excessive moisture. Moisture will also cause drywall tape and wallpaper to become loose and begin to fall away from the wall.

In addition to looking for signs of water damage, building owners concerned about mold should note any odors in the home that may signal the presence of mold

A building owner who believes his or her building has Pinellas Park mold growth should work quickly to correct the source of the moisture and to have the property inspected for mold. The remediation professionals at SERVPRO are available to assist in the safe removal of mold from a building. Offering a combination of training and experience, SERVPRO should be a home or building owners first choice to rid a property of mold.
